Can someone tell me what is the best way to go from Kolkata domestic airport to Howrah Railway Station?
I heard one can take Private Taxis or Pre-Paid Taxis. While Pre-paid taxis are cheaper, they wouldnt take you to till the platform but private taxis take you there. Is this true? How much would be the cost difference?
Also, if I were to have food (light food) on the way, what is the best option? Is there any Mc Donalds outlet or some other fast food outlet on the way where I could just get the burger/pizza packed and have it in the rly stn? Will there be any deliveries made in rly stn?

The first answer to your question is, both are same. Both would take you infront of the Howrah station Main Gate, depending upon the rush / queues of the cars. In Kolkata, Yellow / Black & yellow Taxis with Meters ply on the roads. Those same taxis run as pre-paid ones. The only defference is, in metered taxis, you have to pay them as per the meter readings [ in most of the cases those are mercilessly tampered with to wrench commuters :-0 ] , whereas in pre-paid ones, you have to pay some fixed rate upfront at the pre-paid booths, depending upon the distances. Though, metered taxis are actually cheaper slightly than the pre-paid ones, but if you are not a regular visitor to the city with a good knowledge of the roads, it is better to opt for a pre-paid one. There is another system. There are private cars ( private taxis / deluxe taxis ) which can also take you to Airports / stations. These are not regular coloured Taxis and they do not have fixed rates either. Mostly, these are run by private travelling agencies. If you know someone in the city, he/she can arrange for one. In that case, you'll end up paying 250 odd bucks. But the advantage is, if you travel in those, you would be eligible to enter the cabway within the station which takes you straight inside. But for that , you have to purchase a cab ticket , which will cost you around 50-70 Rupees. If you are travelling by Rajdhani Express - then I would suggest to take private cars & go straight through the cabway inside the station because this road is just beside the platform where from Rajdhani leaves. Otherwise, there is no point.
Regarding your Second one. You can find Haldiram Bhujiwala's huge outlet en route, while you would be travelling by VIP Road ( Najrul Islam sarani ). You can have food there. Otherwise, if you are not that hungry, I would suggest you to go straight to Howrah Station. You would find " Food Plazas" over there, serving good quality food with reasonably moderate rates.

Dear Shubha, I would suggest you take a pre-paid taxi to the Howrah railway station otherwice tha taxi drivers are a menace on the roads and they easily make out whether you are new to the town or not. Plus Pre Piad taxi drivers will not demand "extra" money in the form of tips from you. And on your way to the station i would suggest you don't get down anywhere as you might be lost. The station has some fast food shops which serve pretty good quality food. And just to create a picture to the taxi driver i wold suggest you ask him whether he would take you via kankurgachhi or not?!Though i know you might not know what that is!!just say that in order to sound weighty!!!

Thanks Suranjan and Srouti for the detailed responses! This was very helpful. I took a pre-paid taxi and reached Howrah Station. I had food in the food plaza which was good.
This is the first time I am coming to Kolkata. I felt that the roads through which we were taken through were not good and doesnt give a look of a big City. Is it coz the route was like that? I would be spending about half a day next week in Kolkata. Can you suggest some places where I can go?
For the first time, i saw metro rail. That was very good.

Hey.....Please dont thank us...i think any calcuttan would do the same!!that's our spirit you know!!! And about the places....City Centre, Forum, are great shopping malls. Swabhumi is a heritage spot that you'll enjoy. You get alot of ethnic stuff there but not much to see though. New market is amust vist htouh if you want to shop cheap. If you are ofnd of begali cuisine then I would suggest you try out"Bhojohori Manna"...or 6, Balyygunj place...those are amazing restaurants if you want to taste bengali food. If you want to visit any hertage sites, I would suggest the Indian Museum,Birla Planetorium, and Victoria Memorial. If you want more information about any of these or anything in particular then please dont hesitate to ask..it will be my honour to help you as citizen of Kolkata!!!!!! Have a nice trip.........:)
