A confluence of theatre, cinema, television and journalism would be my one line description of ‘Centre for Film and Drama’. Located on the fifth floor of Sona Towers, Millers road is an integrated production and training center for cinema, television and the stage.
Once on the fifth floor and out of the lift, you look to your left and see a very office-like entrance, which on entering only makes you think, “Did I come to wrong place?”
However it is within this formal, yet personal, official yet creative space that theatre, film and television is explored!
A fairly recent venture initiated by three key people, Prakash Belwadi, Anand Subramaniam, and Vedam Jaishankar, CFD is fast growing into a hub of creative activity.
Prakash Belwadi, a filmmaker,(National Awardee for ‘Stumble’, Best Feature in English, 2004, Writer and director Television and Stage, and State Awardee Pratibha Bhushan) along with Anand Subramaniam, Filmmaker, (Director of commercials, corporate videos) and Vedam Jaishankar, a Journalist who is currently Managing Editor of Bangalore Bias, a daily newspaper, have together established CFD as a reputed and prominent centre for Film and Drama.
Nani Cinematheque
A unique space for film buffs in Bangalore, Nani Cinematheque is an initiative by CFD in association with Collective Chaos, Bangalore Film Society and Films for Freedom.
Available at the Cinematheque are:
• Short term Film-making courses
• Workshops
• Screenin g of short-films, experimental films, documentaries, feature films every Friday, Saturday, Sunday through the year
• Presentations, slide shows, talks.
A theme cafe and a library of DVDs and film related books is also in the making.
The Hall
The hall at CFD is slightly small but personal, and for plays which involve discussions or audience participation the space is ideal. The costs involved are also ideal – Rs 3000/- per day (1show). An 80 seater hall, with excellent lighting, sound systems, and green rooms, I would say that’s quite reasonable.
