This movie left me alternately speechless,moved,tickled and a bit jarred.
I watched it completely by chance at the Pune International Film Festival and it's been the best one so far.Somehow I wasn't expecting my favourite movie of the fest so far to have come out of South Korea.An arthouse film it isn't.It is in Korean but was subtitled in English and I don't think much was lost in translation though one never knows.It has action,masala,humour (both crude and subtle).It satires and creates dramatic tension with equal ease.An absolutely spell binding watch you're holding your breath until the last scene.
The story follows two street performers as they try and make money in 16th century Korea by performing crude plays that mock the king.Of course they are imprisoned and beaten until they make a deal with the King according to which he would set them free if they can make them laugh.The seemingly inane idea is carried out and works in favour of the performers who are made the official court clowns by the unstable king.The ministers are far from pleased however and the king's new consort,a former whore,grows more and more concerned as it becomes obvious that king is becoming increasingly infatuated with one of the clowns.
I won't give anything more away.
Brilliantly made,flawlessly acted, the result is a wonderfully funny yet poignant piece of entertainment that provides fodder for thought.
