Its a good time to be watching Hindi movies. Almost every month you have a special movie releasing. Johnny Gaddar is not a movie which is ever going to be a classic nor is it going to be remembered for great acting or characters. But there is something about Johnny Gaddar - rawness, fast paced story, tight production value, great background scores, tacky editing and suspense.
Nitin Neil Mukesh stars as a suave businessman Vikram who is actually a part of a five member group involved in shady deals for making profits. Dharmendra plays Sheshadri - the brain and connections behind the syndicate.
Vikram is also in love with Rimi Sen wife of Shardul another partner within the group, and plans to run away from the group after ripping them off in one of the deals. Vikram carefully plans the heist off his own partners and assumes the identity of Johnny G, which is later termed by one of the partners as Johnny Gaddaar - hence the name.
As they say - "Even the best laid plans of men go awry!". And the movie is about the heist gone wrong. Partners are keen to find out who stole their money and who killed Shiva (a partner carrying money) in the process, and everybody suspects everybody else. The rest of the story revolves around partners trying to identify the Gaddaar and Vikram trying to avoid detection, leaving behind a trail of blood and dead bodies.
The movie is dedicated to and inspired by James Hadley Chase. Movie is really well scripted and the screenplay is great. One of the few Hindi movies where climax does not disappoint.
Nitin Neil Mukesh grandson of famous 50s-70s singer Mukesh, is lucky to have this movie as a platform to launch his career. He can't act much but he would improve and would be one to look out for. However, he looks to be multi-starrer movie material. Might never carry a movie on himself alone.
The acting department is well supported by the side characters: Prakash - a compulsive gambler, played by Vinay Pathak. Shardul - a greedy profiteer plotting to take over the partners' Casino business, played by Zakir Hussain. Kalyan - a corrupt but ethical cop out to catch Sheshadri's murderer, played by Govind Namdeo. Dharmendra was okay in his brief appearance as Sheshadri Rimi Sen as usual brought her brand of overacting to the movie, thanks heaven her role was very limited.
Full marks to director Sriram Raghavan and four stars for the movie. The movie is highly recommended.
