Watered-down beer, spicy food and great music. And I bet most Pecos regulars would agree with that description. You might ask how, with a description like that, they actually have regulars? Well, Pecos has quite a cult following. You wouldn't guess it when you hear music belting forth from its nondescript entrance, just off Brigade road, but Pecos is a Bangalore Institution.
Enter the winding staircase, to the dingy ground floor and you'll suddenly feel all eyes on you, as if to say, 'Who dat?' Everyone seems to know everyone else here, and if you happen to go in with one of the regulars, you are made to feel one of the gang instantly.
Its always chock-a-block, you’ll even find people sitting on the stairs, staring at you accusingly as you try to get past. Once your eyes get accustomed to the light, or rather lack of it, you’ll notice the tiny place has some amazing posters from the good ol’ days. Behind the bar are rows and rows of cassettes (yes they still play cassettes!). It’s their fabulous music collection.
Go up the winding staircase to the first floor, this is where the newer lot of people sit, so you won’t feel quite as uncomfortable as you would downstairs. Or go on up to the terrace, if you feel like some fresh air and conversation.
They play great music from the 60s and 70s. Blues, jazz, classic rock, soul. If you’re a Grateful Dead fan you’ll hear music you’ll find music that’s simply not available any more.
Dishes Pecos is famous for: Kerela beef fry, chilli beef, chilli pork and dosa-chicken. That and their weekend breakfast of appam and stew. I don’t think they do very good veg.(unless u count their peanut masala!) Beer is Rs. 20 something for a mug and Rs. 120 for the pitcher. A meal for two with lotsa beer thrown in shouldn’t cost more than 500 bucks.
If you’re a beer guzzler, or with a large crowd ask for the Pecos card which entitles you to a free mugga beer after every 10 mugs; or a free pitcher after every 10 pitchers.
