The City center library at Ashok Nagar is an old, huge building that houses mostly ancient books. By ancient, I don't mean classics which you don't find anywhere else, but usually textbook type stuff which is no longer relevant. At least, that's the impression I got when I used to go searching for books some 1 year back. You are not allowed to take books that are expensive, which is something I found even in another city central library in another area.
At the Ashoknagar city library, I took 2 cards, paying extra, but still one cannot borrow books beyond a certain "cost price". This is absurd, since all their books are ancient. At the British library, we can borrow the latest books.
These chaps need to change their model - charge more if needed, and let people borrow all sorts of books. The current model is like serving 2nd rate food and charging less than other restaurants.
If there's anything to recommend it, the rates are very low, and students might find books on school and college subjects - though a bit dated. Also, the buildings are nice, and serve as decent reading halls. Finally, one could possibly read newspapers and old mags.
To sum it, like Samuel Johnson said about something, this is a place worth seeing, but not worth going to see. If you're in the area, drop in. But don't make a 20 min trip to check it out. Hey raam!
