A place that almost got it right
Let me start with the ambience. Great designs but what on earth were they thinking while designing the flooring. A dim lit restaurant with puddles popping up in the corners and all across the middle! Unlevelled flooring to add to it. Have been there 4 or 5 times and seen atleast 2 people trip and fall each time.
The bar area is the best feature of this place. The design is such that it cannot be crowded and noisy and the glass separation between the bar and restaurant is very aesthetic. Table layout is very smartly planned. A good deal of privacy to each table to the extent that small groups of noisy voices cannot really be heard at other tables.
The bar area is great for conversation. Although its got a bit of a contemporary formal 'business' talk feel to it. Decor does not make you feel relaxed...which maybe good in certain contexts, like if you were to take a business client and/ or discuss work/ serious matters with one or few people. I take business clients there very often since it reflects that feel. Music is very sober and played at a mild volume. Few but excellent choice of mocktails - not too sweet, real fruit (as opposed to concentrate and flavourings) and tastes fresh. Beer lover like me gets sold out to the mocktails quite often!
Now lets look at the food. Great menu and almost great food..but too oily and lacking in flavour. Everything about the presentation, ingredients and look is perfect and beats most fine dining restaurants...however they really need to play with improving the flavour balance and reducing the oil content. Meditteranean food is meant to be light and simple not heavy and loaded. I normally order two starters and one main course between two people which fills both adequately.
It is important to note that many people like oily food and use flavourings like ketchup and chilli flakes to heighten flavourings. I dont do that and therefore my expectations, like my taste, gets skewed to one end of a spectrum.
Service is very prompt and waiters have good knowledge of food and are able to communicate effectively. Also, if you ask for a slight modification of a menu item, it is possible to get it....almost.
I find them a little on the expensive side given their inherent faults as a fine dining restaurant. Maybe if they get those right then the pricing will be acceptable.
Laguna confuses me - I dont know whether to like it or not - but im sure this review will help you understand what you want according to the context of what you are looking for.
